Résumé : Les personnages sont indispensables à la progression d’un roman : sans eux, aucune action véritable, aucun changement de situation ne peut intervenir. Même s’ils apparaissent privés de volonté, passifs ou velléitaires, ils restent la source d’un faire minimal qui imprime au roman son rythme, fût-il lent et marqué par la répétition. Toute histoire étant fondée sur un conflit, il existe au moins deux « rôles » présents dans tout roman : le sujet et son adversaire.
Les personnages remplissent en premier lieu une fonction dynamique dans le texte romanesque : leur rôle est de faire progresser l’action, tout en lui assurant une forte cohésion. La narratologie étudie les mécanismes internes d’un récit (comme le rôle du narrateur et le type de focalisation), tandis que l’étude de personnage se concentre sur la construction, l’évolution et la fonction des individus fictifs dans cette structure narrative. Ces deux approches sont complémentaires : la narratologie fournit le cadre analytique (comment l’histoire est racontée), tandis que l’étude de personnage examine un élément clé de ce cadre (comment les personnages sont présentés et jouent un rôle dans l’intrigue).

Abstract : Characters are essential to the progression of a novel : without them, no real action or change in circumstances can take place. Even if they appear to lack willpower, passive or indecisive, they remain the source of a minimal action that sets the pace of the novel, however slow and repetitive it may be. Since every story is based on conflict, there have at least two “roles” present in every novel: the protagonist and their adversary. Characters primarily fulfill a dynamic function in the novelistic text: their role is to advance the action while ensuring its strong cohesion. Narratology studies the internal mechanisms of a narrative (such as the role of the narrator and the type of focus), while character study focuses on the construction, evolution, and function of fictional individuals within this narrative structure. These two approaches are complementary: narratology provides the analytical framework (how the story is told), while character study examines a key element of this framework (how characters are presented and play a role in the plot).
