Abstract: This paper looks into how racism builds up and dismantles the identities of the characters in the chosen novels. It seeks to demonstrate to what extent Twain’s, Wright’s and Morrison’s selected works are social protest novels. In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Black Boy, The Bluest Eye and Tar Baby, whiteness is associated with beauty. In contrast, colour is associated with ugliness. Twain, Wright and Toni Morrison employ these images to stress the destruction of the black community’s infatuation with whiteness. The absence of color is a stronger image of happiness and freedom.
